Ace Academics is a primarily writing-focused learning center that also offers subject tutoring across the curriculum. We have the ingredient that is missing at other learning centers. It’s what makes us unique. It takes more than a great facility, a plan for instruction, and subject area knowledge to create a natural learning environment. It takes the talent of a select group of tutors, hand-picked for their ability to teach.
Knowing what you’re talking about does not make you a teacher. Content area knowledge is the easy part. You expect that. What makes our tutors unlike any others is their ability to know their students as well as their subject.
Consider the words of educator and philosopher Parker Palmer:
Good teaching isn't about technique. I've asked students around the country to describe their good teachers to me. Some of them describe people who lecture all the time, some of them describe people who do little other than facilitate group process, and others describe everything in between. But all of them describe people who have some sort of connective capacity, who connect themselves to their students, their students to each other, and everyone to the subject being studied. (1999, p. 27)
Individualized instruction at Ace Academics begins with tutors who can connect to students and reduce large bodies of knowledge into digestible parts that feed every student’s natural appetite for mental stimulation one bite at a time. Learning looks like a popcorn ball – it starts with one sticky kernel. A second kernel sticks to the first one and is joined by additional kernels until the pattern is complete. Some of our tutors are naturals. Others had a tough time learning, themselves. Either way, they recognize and respect each student as a unique person whose ball of popcorn grows in its own way at its own pace. We believe that every student with the desire to learn can learn.
